Instead of grilling hotdogs or watching fireworks, Instead of grilling hotdogs or watching fireworks, I spent the 4th of July taking the Fide exam.

The Fide exam is Switzerland’s official language test that assesses your level in one of three national languages, dependent on the region you live in, either German, Italian, or in my case, French.

For Swiss nationality, the cantons of Geneva and Vaud require B1 (speaking) and A2 (writing).

The test is broken up into three components: 20 minutes of speaking, 20 minutes of listening, and a 60-minute written exam.

The total cost for the full exam is CHF 250, which you can also take only one part (CHF 170 for the speaking component or CHF 120 for the written assessment).

Registration for the Fide exam may be found directly at: https://switzerlangues.ch/en/fide-registration/
